The GUI and mouse were invented at Xerox PARC, but according to John Seely Brown, the former head of PARC, Xerox had no idea what to do with it. He told me once that Jobs saw the mouse and GUI and kept asking "why aren't you doing something with this?" The PARC guys had no answer.
As for Ken Olson, he was great with minicomputers but also said, "Why would anyone want a computer in their home?" It's worth noting that DEC's PC division was a dismal failure.
Going back even further, IBM's Tom Watson once said, "I think there is a world market for maybe 5 computers."
One doesn't have to invent a technology to do great things with it. All technology (and knowledge in general) is built on what others have done. That's how it works. What sets Jobs apart is that he didn't merely take the ideas of others and bring them to market, but saw how they could be vastly expanded in ways others didn't imagine. Not many people have been able to do this in ways that have transformed multiple industries.
