There's gotta be a story like this between the lot of us!
I actually find working on the cars relaxing (at least most of the time!)
To dig deeper into my own question, it's also a matter of time, weather and tools (pick any three). For instance, I had an indy do a fuel pump because it was 5 degrees out in January. And even if I could use my full of junk garage, it's not heated. In good weather I'd have done it myself. Short distance towing is part of my car insurance so if I screw something up I can always have the beast towed to my indy.
I can't weld, so anything needing a weld goes to a shop.
Jobs that really need a lift to be done efficiently go to a shop.
A/C issues. I have no clue on this stuff, so that I pay for.
I've never needed to do a head gasket, but would try it if I didn't have a deadline and had another car available. It seems more exacting than hard.
Maybe rear shocks because they can be such a bear (at least on a 9K).
Am thinking about taking a welding class and buying a compressor so I could use air tools. That'd expand my repertoire and probably pay for itself in a year or so.
