I had a similar situation with my 1969 SAAB 95 wagon. I purchase a new washer and dryer when I bought my first home and like you I didn't want to pay the delivery charge (the store was about a 1/2 mile from my new home) and when I pulled my SAAB up to the loading area the salesman looked at me like I was crazy (he too said it wouldn't fit). I had them take the washer and dryer out of their boxes for a few exta inches of room and I proceeded to load the washer in on its back (seats folded down of coarse) and drove it home and returned for the dryer.
I sure do miss that car.
I now have a Honda Odyssey and I could probaby fit both the washer and the dryer at the same time standing upright with the rear seat folded and the center seats removed. But it would never get the looks of amazement that my little old SAAB got.
