Reading an e-ink display is a completely different affair than reading a conventional LCD, and that's something that needs to be taken into account. The e-ink displays are easier on the eyes and a closer analog to ink-on-paper, but are obviously less flexible in what they can display versus a conventional LCD. E-ink is monochrome with a slow, slow refresh and LCD is color with a quick refresh. Also, e-ink displays offer battery lives of days or weeks, whereas LCDs will be measured in hours. If this device is purely for reading what would otherwise be a paper book, I think the traditional Kindle (i.e. NOT a Fire) or a Nook is a no brainer compared to a tablet computer. However, if digital magazines, web surfing or other computer-esque functions are desired, you may be willing to sacrifice the "gentler" e-ink display and its battery life and go for a full blown tablet.
I just went through this with my girl, and had to use my imagination too. I don't read anything that isn't on the internet, because books are filled with lies and the internet is made of truth. I ended up going with a Kindle Fire for these reasons:
1. It will get used for occasional web browsing, and the traditional Kindles just aren't great at it.
2. $40 Squaretrade accidental damage warranty, which means if it falls in the toilet or gets sat on in an airplane, I'm not out $200.
3. I don't find full tablets (iPad, Galaxy Tab, etc.) to be a compelling value at $400+. They can't replace my laptop, so spending the extra $200+ to get just to inch closer to a function they still can't actually execute didn't make sense to me.
4. The only tablet I have ever used is an iPad, and I found holding it to be extremely fatiguing over a short period of time, certainly in less time someone who reads books might spend with one. The lighter, 7" Fire seemed to be more on-target for something to hang onto to for a couple hours.
5. For getting books, you can't beat Amazon (and I think you can now buy them again via Saabnet since Amazon reopened their California affiliate program - free money for TSN!)
