They are really pretty different toys.

The Kindle Fire is a color e-reader. The iPad is a tablet computer. I know half a dozen consultants, journalists and writers who have replaced laptops with the iPad and use it for writing, spreadsheets, email, web browsing, etc. They all travel internationally with it and have few issues. And they all have desktop or laptops back in their offices, mostly Macs, with some just recently converted.

For primarily reading books and magazines the Kindle Fire is probably a better bet. Lighter, smaller, and easier to hold makes a big difference. Also better in bright light, like the beach. If she doesn't need it to be a computer and sync to your iMac it's the best way to go. Cheaper, too!

FYI, you can get the Home/Family version of MS Office that has Word for $149 and it has spell check. On the iPad you can get iWork that has a nice word processor.
