My wife is an avid reader as well, the stacks of books were starting to get in my nerves a little :)
First my wife picked up a nook, then later a kindle 3G. She likes the kindle much better overall mainly due to Amazon which will suggest new books of a similar genre as ones you have previously purchased. With the nook, you can only browse after searching for an author/title. The display is better on the Kindle, and IMHO the user interface is cleaner.
The only thing I personally don't like about it, is that to purchase books via the kindle you MUST enter a credit card number into your Amazon account. The method you use to pay for the books is irrelevant, Amazon gift card, Visa gift card, etc. I personally don't like the idea of having an unrestricted credit card set up on the kindle, if it gets lost there is nothing that prevents someone from ordering a large number of books just to be a ????
To get around this I just picked up a one time use Visa gift card, and used that number as the Credit card number on the account. Having a number there satisfies Amazon allowing purchases from the Kindle. Amazon will not charge anything to that Visa gift card though, so I just get amazon gift cards occasionally and apply them to the account. You can then purchase books via the kindle but only as long as you have a balance on the Amazon gift card.
