My commentary was sarcastically tongue in cheek + I know that doesn't translate well over text. Anyway, I do apologize. I should have had more tact.
My point was that I don't believe most cell phone users are of the sensible type you describe vs the "yakkers" you (quite reasonably) also deride. If everyone was a "supertasker" (or at least approaching that), as you may well be, cell phone use as you describe might indeed make the roads safer. But, on a population basis, I suspect (as do others who actually study this stuff - neither you nor I do), that it is not reasonable to attribute lower modern fatality rates primarily to increased cell phone use and not to better average vehicular safety. Note I said "I suspect"... I don't know... neither do you... in science, one is free to choose + test a hypothesis + it is quite reasonable to offer differing hypotheses... to be honest, we both look quite silly debating hypotheses to this extent! better to get data + test them... but I don't care enough about this topic to bother... like I said, I don't have a strong opinion either way on the law... I suspect it is beneficial in the cases where it discourages an honest, law-abiding, otherwise "yakker" from yakking while driving (potentially saving the life of another person), albeit to the inconvenience + frustration imposed on someone like yourself... that I see it as sometimes beneficial + sometimes frustrating does not mean I have a strong opinion wrt the law... lets say, I am mildly in favour of it, but I can see how ymmv. Suffice it to say, we probably have somewhat different value systems (we've been down that road before). I don't have a problem with that... good that people are different + can all express their opinions...
wrt suv's being safer... I agree that they are often actually quite safe passively (mass + volume are huge advantages passively). To some extent, you are misconstruing my POV here (though it may be that I have not expressed myself well in the past)... imho, many SUVs are not as safe actively: vehicle dynamics, sight lines, etc. I don't like driving a vehicle that is like that but some do. To each their own.
but my point from before was: look at collision rates, not fatality rates. I have no idea what the differences are, but correlating cell phone use with declining collision rate is much stronger support for your POV than correlation with decreasing fatality rate, as the former separates out the passive safety component... you may be on to something. fair enough. prove it with data!
