I did a 10k-in-one-month trip in my 9k when it had probably around 250k on the odo. It was a big loop of the US with parts of BC and Vancouver Island thrown in. I tend to think there's a bit too much paranoia in some of these postings too. Be prepared for the most likely break down scenarios such as new belts and hoses and spares, booster pack with pump, good spare tire, extra coolant, and a robust set of tools with zip ties, tape, etc. Bring extra water, food, and a sleeping bag in case you really get stuck. The fact is that most things that fail typically give you some warning, so just be very aware of what your car is telling you. Most mechanics up there are pretty good with temporary fixes and the like.

On my trip we had two issues. A vacuum hose clip came loose in the middle of that desolate sticking up part of Texas and destroyed the serpentine belt. It was an easy roadside repair. The second one was hitting something in the road in northern Vancouver Island which damaged the wheel and bent the control arm so that the car was undrivable for any distance. Some hitch hiking and payphones were involved, but even in this rural area getting the parts from a yard in Victoria sent to a nearby yard was easy. It was another roadside repair, but any mechanic could have done it. The best part was the fantastic Canadians that took my friend and I in for a couple of days while we waited for the parts. With smart phones and FedEx, the world is a pretty small place these days and if you're not in too big a hurry any repair or replacement is possible.
