Sometimes I wonder if mid 90's Jags, MB's, or even Caddies (or Saabs) will be around at vintage car events in another 15-20 years.
I think they will, and here's how I think it will work.
In the nineties, most of the boxes on a car were 8 bit micros (Motorola 68HC11's, for example), running at some absurdly low clock speed. If memory serves, engine controllers may have been 16 bit (largely 6833x) based. Moore's law makes child's play of these.
I'm writing this on an open source OS with an open source browser. What's needed is a standardized, public licensed controller architecture that can drive a similar set of peripherals.
It wouldn't necessarily be easy, and ABS, engine, and transmission controls might be both a technical and IP challenge. But it ought to be possible.
