I have been thinking about picking up a higher-end diagnostic tool - not specifically for Saabs but for broader use. I've got an Audi, Volvo, Pontiac, and Ford at home and look after a Mazda and a PT Cruiser for family.

I'm looking at an OTC Genisys EVO, specifically the 3874 since it handles all the major computers for pretty much every brand of car (although, ironically, not Saab).

There are some terrible reviews about reliability, but virtually all of them from five years ago and the rev 1 hardware running the <rev 3 software. I'm looking at rev 2 hardware and rev 5 software. I'm curious if the situation is really as dire as it's made out to be, and whether there is a better tool or combination of tools at a similar price point that will do the job.

I realize it can't do many of the things that factory tools can in terms of programming or bidirectional diagnostics but it seems like it will at least pull and reset codes from all the critical systems.

It seems like the only other tool that comes close to the price/functionality is the Launch tool, but apparently while is is better for European vehicles, it's quite bad for domestics. Still looking, but getting an itchy trigger finger and seeking advice. :)
