I tried playing trombone in junior high school for a few months; I wanted to play trumpet, but since I was wearing braces at the time, the band director thought that the larger mouthpiece of a trombone was a better idea - but not for a kid who wanted to play something else, it turns out. In any case, I have some appreciation for playing a non-valved, non-fretted, non-keyboard instrument.

After that, I took up guitar and have been through various stages of pop, folk, rock, blues, fingerstyle, bossa nova and now playing jazz guitar - spending a lot of time learning trumpet/sax solos on guitar (full circle!).
