We always buy used and keep cars a long time. The current 4-Saab fleet has two '96s, one '99 and one '03, mileage from 110K to 190K. And we have a great Saab indy. But they won't last forever.

But there isn't a lot new out there right now that makes me want to buy it. The reliance on complex electronics in many cars means costly repairs as they age. Cars like BMWs and Mercs are all over-rated and over-priced. They ARE nice, but not worth the money the way they were when the price premium was much less and they'd last a lot longer than the competition.

I try to look at total cost of ownership over time, and ease of servicing. These days, I find myself looking towards Fords --the new Focus is a nice car, and the 2013 Fusion seems very promising. Am still yet to drive a Japanese car I really like, but I'm also surprised by the Kia/Hyundai car lines. They aren't bottom-feeders anymore. Haven't driven the Optima, but have put about 1,000 miles on 2 Sonatas and they aren't bad at all. With some firmer shocks and performance tires, maybe stiffer roll bars (especially a better rear bar) they'd be OK. And that's all stuff a lot of us do to our Saabs. Then there's the turbo Veloster, which could be a great pocket rocket. I have no idea if they can go the distance, but it seems that with reasonable maintenance they should get to 150K without too much trouble. I worry more about the body and paint than the mechanicals.

It's a changing world. Lots of cars now offer what only the Euro makes did 15 or 20 years ago. Seems to me the people who automatically dis cars like the Hyundai and Kia are maybe a bit too concerned with what other people think, which is kinda funny coming from people driving Saabs, which are themselves definitely a bit off-center to most people.
