Put me on the side of being against most government subsidies - oil, mortgage, student loans, cars, etc so further discussion of those is just a smokescreen.

The government shelling out $7,500 to purchasers of expensive cars is a tremendous mis-allocation of resources. The people who buy Leafs or Volts or any of the other eligible vehicles (I'm positive the Prius does not qualify for a tax break of that magnitude) are people with well above average means to begin with. My heart does not bleed for someone who chooses to buy a Volt to "save gas" when a functionally equivalent (superior really) Cruze for $15k less gets 40 mpg. Joe Schmoe who only has $10k to spend on his next car is thus subsidizing a more well-to-do person's car. This is patently absurd.
