I use AllyCAD, a South African program, for my furniture design business - it writes fool-proof AutoCAD .dwg files - much lower price of entry and plenty of keyboard short-cuts. The current version offers 3D as well, though I'm not yet into that so can't comment on the implementation. The support is excellent, if needed
I have a self-built Shuttle with an E6600 2.4Ghz processor and only 4 gig RAM running 32-bit Windows 7, ie. about 3.5 in reality - no problems if you keep the graphics drivers up to date. I have used it quite happily in XP, they ask for a Core 2 Duo processor and 2gb RAM but it will work with less than that
