Good thing you brought up China. Did you notice what's been happening as a consequence of their "massive government investments to expand their economy . . . infrastructure"? Highways and bridges that collapse within a year of construction, entire city (the capital Beijing) submerged in over 6 feet of water because the government contractors skipped underground pipes (i.e. no pipes under the manholes) resulting in hundreds people drowning while sitting in their cars in stuck traffic. Millions of police hired to put down hundreds of millions of hapless people protesting the forcible taking of their land and homes to build those "massive government investments" artificially boosting GDP.
If you think that's the model of good governance, you probably think the French aristocrats had it best on the eve of their Revolution and subsequent invention of the Gillotine.
Oil and gas production certainly are not subsidized except for the warped idea that essentially amounting to the government owning all the air and letting you breath is some kind of subsidy. Likewise infrastructure is not subsidized because the gasoline tax revenue would have paid for far better infrastructure if not for the monopolistic government control over infrastructure awarding contracts to favored cronies. Farmer subsidy amounts to government paying farmers NOT to grow food; in other words:
We get food DESPITE not because of government subsidy telling farmers not to produce food.
We get roads despite government siphoning money through gasoline tax and wasting it on bridges to nowhere and overpaying union road builders.
We get oil and gas despite governments levying heavy taxes on oil and gas.
Private initiative in the hybrid car development is quite obvious: Toyota Prius is staring at you. It is readily available for sale and is sustainable for widespread adoption without having to loot other people and despite of being looted by government tax-and-subsidies like the Volt.
