This is not really the place to hash this stuff out, but since it' been brought up...
In brief, even the most cursory reading of history will clearly reveal that government is the most bloodthirsty, corrupt institution ever devised. The history of government is one of endless savage butchery, slavery, and looting. The best you will ever get from any government is that it is a "necessary evil." However, necessary evils are still evil and should be strictly controlled. The history books are full of examples of what happens when governments are given unrestricted power and the results are not pretty.
There is some dispute as to who actually stated that “Government is not reason, it is not eloquence — it is force! Like fire, it is a dangerous servant and a fearful master." This quote has long been attributed to George Washington, which may not actually be the case - but whoever said it was absolutely correct!
One of the best depictions of the nature of the State comes to us in the form of fiction. I highly recommend reading George Orwell's "Nineteen Eighty Four" or seeing the movie version featuring Richard Burton (his last film).
My $02 worth.
