Well in this case we couldn't go for a drive because there were wires across our driveway! Second time in 8 years living in this house... go figure.
The genny is a bit on the large side but with a heat pump heating/cooling the house, electric hot water, and a large plasma TV that the wife considers essential to life it's not that much. ;^) Plus it wasn't the most reasoned purchase anyway... it was more like I was cruising C-list, noticed "hey here's this huge generator for cheap" and we bought it. All 1,000 lbs of it!
Re fuel consumption it actually runs on propane - claimed consumption is 4.6 gallons/hour and we have two 100-gallon tanks so it would run a little less than two days at full load. Of course most of the time it wouldn't be running at full load - hopefully.
