but first to your question, if you allowed really high humidity in the room for extended period, with Chicago winter temp's, you could drive significant moisture into the wall cavity. Intermittently, probably not going to cause harm, repeatedly, not good.
My showers are of short duration, water temp reasonable (i.e., probably less than most Americans), shower head is low-flow, and I turn off the head while I lather up. Very little humidity, and the bathroom is open to the bedroom, further allowing dispersal. I doubt if I use more than 4-5 gallons total.
