Everyone has been pretty upbeat in their advice, and to be honest I've been hesitant chime in with a less optimistic point of view. Loosing your job is a hard pill to swallow and no one wants the be the voice of doom and gloom. But I'm not sure it really helps you either, and it could actually do you harm. I went through much the same thing about five years ago and one thing I learned was that optimism can be both your best friend and your worst enemy. You have to walk a fine line and keep your approach grounded in reality. First there's nothing "alleged" about the difficulty of trying to find a job in your mid-fifties--it's utterly brutal. I can give you a long list of the reasons why, but won't here. Second, my guess is there will be a lot highly qualified, ex defense industry types looking for work as there are big cuts in military spending. Maybe you'll have your choice of great paying, comparable jobs in a variety of industries and it'll just be a matter of picking the right one. But it may not quite play out that way. So I'll cut to the chase and give you a few hard won bits of wisdom that may or may not apply to your situation, and I hope they don't. First, your best chance for finding another job is NOW. Once you are unemployed, your chances go down as every month tics off. Do not turn down ANY offer of employment that doesn't involve wearing a blue vest. Even if it's less money/prestige and involves relocating. It could be the only offer you will get. You can always find something better later, but don't bank on it. And it may very well come down to what you can get with your skills rather than having a lot of choice. Finally, consider the possibility that you may end up do something completely different, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. I ended up totally re-inventing myself, and now I'm making more money than I ever have, I'm doing new things, having some real adventures and absolutely love what's turning into a new career. Loosing my job was the best thing that happened to me in 20 years! So there is hope, you just have to be open the opportunities that come, even if they're outside the box. You'll know more as you go--I wish you luck.
