I've also had a remarkable number of years of good luck with traffic tickets (wow, almost 10 years now!), but had my share before that. If you have the time it's worth going to court. My experience is that the first date you get is to make a plea. You have the opportunity to speak with the prosecuting attorney. Dress nice, bring a printout of the your driving record which you can request in advance (though I wasn't actually asked for this) and ask to have it reduced to a non-moving violation, PJC (if they have that in NJ), or 10 mph over. I think the latter is a fair expectation. This way everyone wins, you still pay the fine so the state gets their money without dealing with a court case and you don't get points. If you don't want to go, call a local traffic attorney and see how much they'll charge - it could still be worth it. You'll likely get similar results either way, in my opinion.
Be glad you weren't in a state like VA with mandatory reckless for more than 15 over.
FYI, the below are the states that formally share and do not share (eg Mass) traffic tickets, but I guess it's pretty imperfect as some share anyway. I've also gotten a ticket in Montana that was never shared, so I'm guess luck plays some role. I'm also guessing NJ and CT are a little more on the ball about this.
As a member of the DLC member states are required to report ticket convictions received by a motorist back to the state where they are licensed to drive. Their own state then determines if this offense will be placed on their driving record and if any points will be assessed.
The members of the DLC: include Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, District of Columbia, Florida, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Dakota, South Carolina, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia and Wyoming.
Thus this leaves the states of Georgia, Massachusetts, Michigan, Tennessee and Wisconsin as non-members, though, most of these states still have their own agreements with other states to exchange information regarding traffic tickets.
