It's really about a shift in thinking. Most of us on this site, myself included, are rooted in what I call the European model, ie. the idea of having high quality, durable, relatively simple cars that last a long time. The problem is no one builds cars like that any more. It's a lot like TV's, there was a time when a good TV would last 15 years. In fact I can remember when you could test and replace tubes yourself. Eventually in got more complex, but you could still have a TV repaired by professionals. Now a TV lasts 4 or 5 years and when it breaks it's cheaper to throw it away and get a new one. We may be moving into the same dynamic with cars. When you hear some of the horror stories people are having with 4 or 5 year old cars, how complicated they are, how you become a hostage to the dealers, etc it might actually be cheaper in the long run to just lease them for 3 or 4 years and move on. At this point you can still make a contrarian approach work, but once you get past cars of the early 2000's, it gets a lot trickier. I suppose one could stay stuck in the 90's automotively for the next 30 years, and there's some merit to it. It probably would be a lot cheaper. Personally I just don't have the time, energy and inclination to fart around with cars like I used to--admittedly it's an occupational thing that could change at some point. But I have to say that having changed my thinking on cars from "married forever" to "just dating" has been utterly liberating.
