Unless you sell it or total it, it doesn't matter what it's worth. The way to look at repairs is in terms of the amount of drive time it buys you. Would it be worth putting a $3000 rebuilt engine or transmission in a car worth $2000? Absolutely if the rest of the car will last for as little as another two or three years. Driving costs money plain and simple, either by the cost of the car if you pay cash, payments, interest and depreciation if you buy new, or repairs on a car you own outright. Repairs are the cheapest route by far. If you replace the engine, transmission and every wear item on your car and it costs $10,000, you'd have a car that you could drive for ten more years without much going wrong. That's $1000 a year, cheaper than any other purchase scheme you can work out.
