I replaced my '01 9-5 wagon with a '07 XC70. It's been a solid car for the last 40,000 km. I had to replace a power seat module (that somehow made the climate control go nuts), front sway bar links, and front brake pads (car has 70,000km now). Seems similar to 9-5 in engineering (similar Swedish solutions to questions). Much more accessible parts and service here. Where a 9-5 needs Tech II to access all programming, you can buy a clone Volvo DICE for $100 that does all the same stuff.
Where the 9-5 has a sporty feel and drives lighter/smaller than it is, the XC feels heavier than it is and more plush. Volvos seem to hold up very well in terms of rust/interior wear etc as they get old. The AWD is fantastic in winter. Comfy seats, passenger space front and rear a little cramped compared to 9-5, great cargo space (I hauled home a full size washing machine in the box).
I miss driving my 9-5 but not working on it - if you read about some problem on the board, my '01 had all of them.
