granted, not a natural disaster, totally man-made.
Regarding Hawaii, I don't think that they see typhoons, and a tsunamis is only as threatening as the proximity to the nearest fault line, which may be quite a distance away. A thousand miles of ocean (if that far) can dissipate a lot of energy.
Michigan may know how to dig out of a snow storm, but serious blizzards are always a possibility. Throw in ice storms, they can be deadly.
Here just south of you in Indiana, we're similar, but possibly subject to more tornado activity (still relatively rare).
