I saw something in the paper that the NY State Police are beginning to use modified unmarked cars to look for calling or texting drivers on the NYS Thruway system and other parts of their jurisdiction.
The cars are modified so that the driver is sitting slightly higher then they would in a regular car to afford a clearer view into the cabin of other cars as they patrol.
I travel the NYS thruway ~45 miles a day, and I can't tell you the number of people I see holding their phones and either speaking or texting as they drive. Hope it helps catch some of these folks, and that they publicize the results like they do with the DWI stops -- a simple note usually shows up in our local papers saying XX number of motorists were stopped over the weekend for DUI/DWI. Add the distracetd driving stats too!
As the father of a new driver, I feel pretty strongly about this and work hard to set the right example.
off my soapbox......
