Although I can afford a new car, I always buy used as that has proven to be the most cost effective way to own a car - for me. I can never see the fuel savings offsetting the higher cost you pay for a new hybrid; that math just does not work, even versus a similar new gas powered car.
I don't want to be around when the expensive battery packs have to be replaced on a hybrid or electric car, so you won't see me buying a used one.
I also doubt whether hybrids and electrics are better for the environment in the long run when you have to obtain rare earth minerals from conflict countries for the batteries, dispose/recycle the used batteries or have a shorter life of the "used" car because no one will pay up for new batteries 75,000 miles from now when you want to sell, and it goes to the crusher.
The cost of electricity is scheduled to increase dramatically over the next few years due to government policies, so the cost of recharging will only go higher.
