We've owned two VW TDI diesels, a manual Jetta and automatic Golf . You take a hit on the mileage with the auto, but the Jetta consistently gave me 45+ mpg in mixed driving. One road trip I got 52 mpg. The diesel's a heavy engine, so the front end has more of a tendency to understeer in corners and cause wear on the front tires. Usual VW reliability issues.
