Using an alternative scale, perhaps a relative one, might alleviate some of the car manufacturers' crash test gamesmanship. The scale needs to be adjusted so that consumers can differentiate between 3.55 starts and 4.45. Five stars should perhaps be for the extreme examples, perhaps the S60 and the Tesla. A Camry for example isn't in the same league and the small overlap test shows that.
IIHS could introduce new tests more frequently so the manufacturers can't design for the tests. I'd like to see more extreme, but realistic tests as a way of raising the bar for all. I'd rather a 3 star result in a brutal test than 5 stars in what is a more common, but more minor crash.
