Back in college I remember driving down a mile or so of one lane dirt road--with about 15" of dry powder on it--in my '70 VW Bug. The pow just flowed over the car in the dark. But I'd gotten the same car stuck in about 6-7" of heavy wet snow, and once needed someone standing on my rear bumper to get up a 1/4 mile 10% grade to get to my dorm when there was only about 3 inches of slick wet stuff on the street.
Flash forward to a 4% grade on ski area access road 30 years later. I'm stopped on ice in a Ford Exploder. The FWD cars are barely able to move. Some can't. I drop it into low range 4WD and up I go. Traction matters!
OTYOH, a buddy of mine manages to get his Suby Outback stuck near his place at Mad River Glen nearly every winter.
And I've gotten my 9K stuck when it slid off the glacier I call a driveway.
98% of the time a Saab with 4 winter tires will be all you need. But it will depend on the snow and the road and the driver.
