I'm kind of shopping for a small SUV since my back has made it tough to get in and out of low slung vehicles (bye-bye Viggen vert), and asked my mechanic about X-3s. He said don't get one newer than 2007 since BMW used a magnesium alloy in the block which caused real problems. I did look at a 2005 X-3 with sport package and liked the ride (for and SUV); it has as much or more interior and storage room as the X-5, and the 6 speed manual trans is slicker than snot on a brass door knob. Simple DIY shouldn't be a problem on the older ones; I do a lot on my E39 5 series, which has the same engine and a lot of the same electronics, but the X-3 drive train is the complex and heavy haldex 4WD system.
