I would judge it by recommendations and by actual service you receive. A tidy service area and front end may indicate a meticulous ownership, but that may or may not extend throughout the operation and vice versa. The dealer experience is all about providing the customer a facade of ease and you pay for that... sometimes way more than you should. Some of these indies are super busy and understaffed to deal with some of those fine details like a dealer, but care about getting your car operational, and that is all that should matter. I wouldn't go to a dealer out of warranty... no point. Waste of $$.
