It's true, it's a lot of fussing with a stick and probably annoys some people... but driving in stop and go with a stick is never fun anyway. I try to be a little considerate in that regard. Eg if a big truck comes up behind me, I don't really need to leave as much gap anymore. Their mass makes it unlikely for a car to push them forward.
I see some others doing this clearly intentionally. Others just stop a car length back. That works fine. It slows the whole chain. Makes it safer for them even if they don't realize it. If the guy behind stops on my bumper, I roll less (need more cushion in front).
Seems weird at first, but after you do it for a while, it just becomes second nature. I'm not a slow driver, but I will manage the speed of cars behind me on the freeway if I see a problem evolving in front of me, make space, drive into it, pass quickly, etc... I'm really not a cruise control sort of driver... I'd rather take control of things than sit back and drink a coffee while stuff happens around me... all different types of approaches, but that is what I was taught to do and it works for me. Lots of yahoos on the road - can't trust anyone to not screw up!
