The pilot light "powers" the flame sensor (thermopile or thermocouple).
When you hold down the pilot light button, you are manually opening the internal valve supplying gas to the pilot light. When the sensor heats up it generates the power to keep the pilot gas valve open when the pilot light button is released. Should pilot go out, gas to the pilot will shut off as well as gas to the main burners.
1. Sensor may not be properly positioned in the flame. Sensor must be properly engulfed by the flame in order to generate the millivolts required to keep the internal pilot valve open.
2. Sensor may be bad and no longer capable of generating the required output.
3. Gas valve may be bad.
4. Check that wiring connections at valve are tight.
Your problem is most likely a worn out sensor.
