Excellent feedback, thanks. Some responses to your questions/comments.....
How many miles? Shock tower rust?
The 9000 is a CS not an aero, and it has 150k miles. No shock tower rust at all from inside car. A bit of rust at top of wheel liner though where shock goes thru, I've exposed this area and there's about a half inch rust I removed then POR'ed, then undercoated.
What is the shop doing for $850? Do they guarantee the rust won't come back? What kind of warranty do they include?
They will be adding steel and correcting qtr panel rust not only wheel arch but front and back of arch as well(just on qtr panel) then finishing, painting-clearcosting. We didn't discuss warranty - am curious what a reasonable warranty should be?
Alternatively, you could do something on your own for a fraction of that $$ and some time over a weekend. If it is minor, that may be the way to go.
Yes thats true, however the metal addition (prob riveting) and painting portion of the task -the color is dark blue- would be amateur at best :-(. Although the filling, putty and glazing would prob come out ok, and be fun to do.
Cosmetic rust today is structural rust tomorrow. Procrastinating this through another winter, may make a small problem a massive (ie welding) problem.
I say cosmetic because it does not effect function of the car...the wheelarches under the trim piece have significant-extreme rust already with 6 inches of arch missing in a few places. Arch trim piece only has a few of the 8mm attach bolts functional.
How carefully have you looked over the car? Have you pulled the carpets etc? Rust bubbles on the fender are usually the tip of the iceberg. I would do that before doing anything else.
Car is remarkably free of rust elsewhere.
Once you get the car fixed, oil spray to prevent/slow down future rust. The only parts of my c900's that have rust are where the oil spray wasn't.
Interesting, good to know.......
