I bet if you did the analysis, it takes more energy and creates more pollution to manufacture the new unit, than the energy difference between the new unit and the old unit. Not to mention that old tech is often repairable while new tech is disposable.
Continuing to use the old <insert just about any manufactured product here> until it dies is likely "better for the planet" than replacing it with a new one.
