Expedia seems to be the worst at this. At the moment you try to book, the price goes up. I've had it happen where I accept the higher price, then it goes up again. Like they're just trying to see how high you'll go. Expedia also so royally screwed up a reservation on United for me, that I'll never use them again. I forget the details, but it was a convoluted mess and cost me a lot of money.
Then my story with Priceline is that, when I was boarding a connection at JFK, there was someone sitting in my seat, with a boarding pass having my seat number. Jet Blue claimed that someone at Priceline cancelled my ticket after I boarded the first leg of my trip. I kind of doubt that - I think Jet Blue was making some kind of jerk move, considering how badly they treated me from that point on (threatened to call security and have me arrested if I did not get off the plane immediately. It went like this: You have to get off the plane. Me: But I'll be late to my meeting. I'm a speaker at the meeting and can't be late. Isn't there any other option? Them, on radio: Security to gate 22. Then to me: We'll have you arrested.), but I think my using Priceline gave them an opportunity to blame someone else.
So I would agree with the advice to deal only with the airline. That way there's more accountability. Get an airline-specific credit card, one that gives you benefits like checking one suitcase free. And my other advice is to avoid Jet Blue. I'll never fly with them again. I have a big fat voucher from them, sitting in a drawer, which I will never use.
