A few years back I was burned with seat assignment while traveling with kids. We bought tickets and did not reserve seats. When we got to the airport, there was no human to issue our tickets -- only touchscreen systems with very impolite and unresponsive customer service trying to look busy. We could not get seats all together, which was a big problem with two little kids. Eventually we worked it out with passengers on the plane but the airport personnel and the airline was very unresponsive to our needs. This was in Newark (EWR) and I am sure anyone who has traveled out of EWR recently knows exactly what I am talking about.

Since then I always reserve seats ahead of time. If seats are not available together, I pick another flight or another destination. However, I have not found a way to reserve seats though third party web sites, such as Expedia. The best they can do is get your preference about window/isle and "relay it to the airline." What a joke. I end up ordering directly from the airline, which allows me to select and reserve seats. The price is usually the same.
