Maybe not my favorite, but certainly the most memorable was realizing I was still alive and not seriously injured after a head-on collision in my beloved 1999 9-5 wagon (I was actually nearly T-boned on the driver's side), followed by visiting the car where it was towed to get my stuff out of it and realizing just how bad the damage was. As a former paramedic, I already knew how lucky I was just to live through what I was sure was about to kill me, but seeing the car really brought it home.

It still hurts to look at the photos of my wrecked baby, but she gave her life to save mine, and at the end of the day, this is what you want a car to do, if it comes right down to it. My insurance also paid me well over 4x what it was actually worth, too, so that didn't hurt.

And yes, I went right out and bought another one - a 2005 with a whopping 21K miles on it. Used, because this was summer 2009, and there weren't any new ones in the entire region. Scared, because I'd never had a used car before, but it's still running well despite a bunch of cosmetic issues and squeaks, and I still haven't hit 60,000 miles.

A few years ago, my father wrapped his Mercury Marquis around a telephone pole at probably a good bit lower speed, and certainly without the additional forces involved in having another vehicle barreling into his car, and proportionally, the damage to it was much worse from less of an impact. That brought the value of Saab engineering and safety home to me all the more.
