Going way back I used to mix roofing tar with motor oil and brush the messy stuff on any sign of rust and places that looked like they may rust.
Later went to LPS 3, until I got a couple cans that plugged up and showed signs they had poor quality control.
Lately, after looking around for something better than average, have been using Sprayon LU710. It's rated for 24 months outdoor use and says on the can "not for retail sale". I got 4 or 6 cans off the web. This type "protectant" uses solvents to penetrate crevices and carries the wax with it.
On the 76 99 I used dripless oil on small paint bubbles, made a small hole in the bubble, of there wasn't already one, and dabbed on dripless oil on so it could wick into the bubble. It would stop the spread of small bubbles.
Never had trouble with the 9000 upper rear shock mounts rusting. Would spray the outer mount area every year or two, and later on sprayed the inner mount area. One way the mount area can start rusting, is when the upper rubber bushing washer is installed upside down or the paint in the area is damaged when messing with the rear shocks.
