Disclaimer: I am a mountain biker, not a roadie!
So I'm not sure who you are talking to who has had bad experiences with Crank Bros pedals, and which pedals they are riding, maintenance habits, riding skill, etc... What I can say is this - everyone I know who rides them, loves them. Pretty much all my riding friends switched from SPD to egg beaters years ago for mtb, because they are simple, clean out well (don't gunk up while riding), last a really long time, are easily repairable with kits that are readily available, they are lightweight, they don't corrode, the click in and out and float is completely fluid and transparent and intuitive - it is as if I have sticky pedals that stick when I want and let go when I want... I rode SPDs and Richies for years prior and these are a revelation in comparison! All of us put serious miles on our bikes (24hr racing, some of my friends will even travel across the country for enduro races). I don't actually even find the cleats wear unduly - in fact - it is essential that you take any cleats off your shoes at least once a year anyway so the bolts don't corrode in place. So no biggie to change cleats then (and better that the cleats wear than the pedals)... But I get many many miles out of a set of cleats. I've got these on all my bikes, and they've lasted really well, even though I am pretty hard on my bikes (our trails are very rocky and technical so the bikes get bashed a fair bit).
However, there are some rules to Crank Bros. ownership:
1) Stainless is bottom of the line (but it is probably all you will ever need also). I don't think the cheaper models are as good, and the various Ti models are just weight saving options (and in fact some come with a rider weight limit!)... Pay for stainless, ignore the cheaper pedals, and they will last.
2) Candy is just fluff. Those pedals are designed to appeal to the iPod generation with all the gimicky colours... they look like they will be easier to use because of the "platform". Noooo... they are 2 sided instead of 4 sided so fewer angles to click to and they gum up. So basically they take away all of the benefit of egg beaters for people scared to commit. In reality, they are a harder pedal to use than the one that looks harder to use!
3) I don't know much about the DH models. There might be better pedals for DH for the same reasons as Candy. But if this is a road bike, you shouldn't be shopping DH pedals anyway!!
In short: Crank Bros plain old 100% stainless eggbeaters are awesome!
That said, my roadie friends love Speedplay pedals for their road bikes. I don't do road myself, but my impression was that these are much trickier to learn but have a more optimized pedal feel for road. So it depends on the bike and the rider's objectives. They are a well built pedal also afaik. Again, these folks are putting many many 1000's of miles on high end road bikes every year, so they've had time to try various options and find things that work.
