The car I'm considering for purchase is a Laser Red 2004 9-5 Aero, with 5-speed manual transmission, and all the options including heated and ventilated seats. It was moved to the midwest last year, all previous records (2008 - 2013) trace back to Arizona. It has about 118,000 miles on it. I have not personally seen the car; instead, I'm relying upon a paid PPI conducted by a knowledgeable SAAB mechanic (as referred by TSN in this site's directory). I've been looking nationwide for nearly a year. If you are interested in the particulars, please send me a PM. As a point of recent comparison, I found a 2002 9-5 Aero, fully optioned, in Cosmic Blue but decided to not go with that because the purchase cost coupled with the cost to fix everything to A-1 condition and ship would easily have exceeded $11K. So I'm going to be smart about this. When it comes time to place an offer, it will be through a third party agent. That said, I'm beginning to think that finding that "near perfect" 2004 9-5 Aero that had only one loving owner from the arid Southwest/West and with <60,000 miles is an improbable find (my wife calls it searching for the holy grail).
Anyway, back to the results of the PPI. The mechanic said that, mechanically, the car is better than 90 percent of other 9-5's of similar age and model. There is a clutch pressure plate that will eventually have to be replaced, and the rear subframe bushings need to be replaced. The car is not true stock as a previous owner put some Maptune components in it (think boy racer, not tastefully understated). His biggest (really, only) complaint is that all of the top surfaces (hood, roof, trunk) were repainted - quality is good but not superb. He thinks that it several years, it will need to be repainted. His guess is that it may have been hail damaged.
As to the missing history between 2004 and 2008: his educated guess is that this car was a Foreign Delivery Purchase. As this car has been sold at action at least twice, there is no stack of maintenance and service records.
Time to cut this post short and get some sleep... |-)
