There's room for any car if it has something people want and they can't get it elsewhere. The Mini Cooper and Jeep Wrangler come to mind. Building a 3 or 5 series wanna-be isn't what it takes and unfortunately that's where Saab went in it's waning days. And the irony is that later Saabs were probably the best, most reliable cars they built. The better they got as cars, the less they offered in terms of distinctiveness and that was their undoing. Sometimes car companies have their day, hit a sweet spot and ride it. But it's almost always limited to a particular time, place and set of circumstances. The VW Beetle (in spite of being very crappy as a car) was in the right place, at the right time, with the right stuff in the late 50's and whole of the 60's. When it was over in the early 70's, VW was never able to recapture what they had. Saab hit it's stride around '85 with a unique combination of performance, economy, safety, durability, and funky looks/personality. But by '95 it was over. The 9K soldered on and was probably one of their best cars (the C900 was more iconic though). Each new model was less and less "special" and more mainstream. No one really knows what they could have done differently--the only thing GMs meddling did was keep them in business a lot longer that they would have otherwise. I'm not too optimistic that anyone is going to come up anything that will capture the magic that was Saab.
