Good luck with these miscreants. I use them for both my home and business internet, phone and long distance service, so I have to call them almost monthly to argue about my bills - each service is on a separate cycle and they jack up the rates when the cycle ends. Their latest time waster is that after waiting to talk with a rep, you can't actually discuss your current issue without going through their scripted menu where they try to upsell you a pile of services that you don't want or need (really, I don't want U-Verse TV service at my business, and AT&T cellular service has no coverage near my home!). Unfortunately, the competition (i.e. Comcast) is even worse in my experience.
You might want to try pursuing this through your credit card company, if that's how you paid. Credit card issuers REALLY value their clients and will go to bat for them to try and keep you as a customer.
Definitely not the "Ma Bell" of old!
