Adjusting the valve train in a stock SBC is done by having the rocker securing nut loose enough that there is slack in the valve-train and then tightening it slowly while spinning the pushrod with your fingers. When you hit the instant when you can not spin the push rod you then tighten the nut 1/2 turn (180 degrees) more. Of course you make that adjustment on each valve with the crank at a specific point in it's 720 degree cycle so there is a sequence for rotating the crankshaft and then adjusting specific rockers. If you need that sequence I can provide it but you should be able to find it on line.
