Our story so far, about a year ago, when I was living in Florida, I decided that the BMW 650i convertible that I was driving was overpriced, over engineered and uncomfortable. I wanted another Saab convertible, but, of course they don’t make them anymore. I looked for low mileage 2010’s and 2011’s but couldn't find anything. I finally decided that, arguably, the next best thing was a Volvo convertible. I found a leftover C70 at a dealer about 2 hours away from me. It is a loaded Inscription model with, I think, every option available including the Polestar engine upgrade which upped the HP from 227 to 250. Plus my fat ass fit very comfortably in the seat, although not as comfortable as a Saab seat. Made a couple of Florida to Boston trips and found it to be a great highway cruiser.
Three months ago I relocated back to Boston from Florida for a long term consulting gig. I figured, Volvo, front wheel drive, hardtop… perfect for New England winters, like my Saabs used to be. Well, it ain’t a Saab. Granted, this is about the worst winter on record. And I have no garage. The car does warm up quick, although the heated seats leave something to be desired. I tried to get remote starter installed, but nobody local would do it even though I know it can be done. The car has its quirks, but unlike Saab, the quirks are annoying and useless.
So, I have this nice car, which I’m paying a lot for and drive maybe 20 miles a week, getting abused by a New England winter. I’m thinking, why don’t I try and find a nice, low mileage 2010 or 2011 Aero convertible and trade down. I may lose some of the sub-par electronic features of the Volvo, but probably nothing I would miss, except maybe the key-less entry. I can easily increase the power in the Saab with an ECU upgrade. The Volvo does have a 48 month warranty, but I can probably get an extended warranty on the Saab and here are still ex-Saab dealers locally who will service the car.
I haven’t found anything that interests me yet, partly because I want one with lots of options… just because and there just aren't that many around.
Bottom line: am I nuts?
