Snowmobile,
Snow making is usually something that we see here in California in November/December to get us going early since the slopes may or may not covered with natural snow by the holidays. It is usually limited to a couple of runs that are manicured to not have stumps or brush or anything else. There's usually no need for it after the start of the year.
The resorts usually close in the spring for the same reason you describe... the people in the cities (who don't see snow at all around here) start to garden, golf, etc...
Below is a photo of me in the late '90s, probably sometime in late March. The snow bank isn't so much a pile, as the snow removal equipment used is primarily snow blowers to get the snow far enough away from the roads to make room for more. The snow bank shown is bigger than on an average year, but not by much.
This year has been different. Snow making has been utilized for much of the season to keep the flat and non-north-facing areas covered.
This year has been sad, really...
~Peter
