WHEN was the battery light on? It should go off after the engine is running and the alternator is putting out BUT will be on when the key is on and the engine is not running. If the battery light is on when the engine is running it indicates an imbalance between the battery's state of charge and the alternator output which you can imagine can be due to any weakness anywhere in the charging system. It's possible that your charging system has been failing for a long time and bit the dust when you turned on the wipers, blower motor (for defrosting) and/or headlights in the downpour.
You couldn't get enough water to go down a dipstick tube in a minute or two to cause the engine to falter, not a factor.
Water on defective high tension leads will cause misfiring and could keep the engine from running. You could certainly have gotten them wet enough in that time to cause a problem. Water under the distributor cap will keep a car from starting too. I suspect that wet ignition components are the most likely cause of your problem. WD40 man!
