Some good, some bad. Between the kids and my wife we've gone through
a lot of Apple kit. Comparing it overall to the pc-based stuff (laptops
and desktops), it's been the apple equipment that's died. All the others
sort of got outmoded, or degraded gracefully (i.e fan gets noisy). Now in
the case of laptops, how well they're treated is a lot of it -- if they
get turned on and off and hauled around and dropped on the floor in backpacks that's going to be tougher then the desktop that never moves
and is always on so it's at a constant temperature. That being said
I did have a mac mini that simply made a single quiet pop and never
ran again.
So for a laptop, used may be ok. If you do backups weekly and it dies,
it isn't the end of the world. But.. you're talking about the
backup device itself. How much do you loose if it dies? I'm not sure
I'd want to scrimp on that particular item.
