we have 3 saabs. Newest is a 2004 purchased in cash about 4 years ago. To me that is the sweet spot if there is one. At that 5-7 year point, there are enough good ones left and enough depreciation hit, that you can find a reasonably priced good car. Depreciation generally slows after that, and asking prices are higher right off lease. Off lease cars can be just as much trouble. Our oldest saab is now 26 years old and just keeps going like the energizer bunny. It is our cheapest car to own. Like K and Jersey, I do a lot of my own work.
If you can't DIY, it may still be cheaper, but only if you find a car that was well maintained and is relatively cost effective to maintain. Some of those cars hold their value too well in the used market though (eg Honda civics etc).
