PBS pledge drives

Is there anyone here who works for PBS or understands their rationale? And I should say upfront that I like PBS, I watch a number of shows and contribute money. But during their pledge drives their strategy seems to be to take away all the shows I watch and put other shows on, and it goes on for weeks. I suspect they think these other shows are somehow special, but mostly they aren't or I've seen them so the net result is that I watch something different (we have 400 channels). Sometimes it goes on for so long I get out of the habit of watching the PBS show. So how is driving your viewers away a winning strategy? I understand the need for the drives and I'm fine with it. Why not show the programs I watch, break in and ask for a buck. Then there's that connection--I watch this so yes I should contribute. Otherwise I don't watch any of it.
